This month I read the book The Summer I Turned Pretty by Jenny Han. This story is about a teen girl named Isabel (aka Belly) who stays at a beach house every summer with her mom’s best friend — Susannah— and her two sons, Conrad and Jeremiah. Belly has been in love with Conrad ever since they were little. She hopes that Conrad will admire her differently this summer. Mid-summer, Belly’s distracted by a new guy named Cam; and Jeremiah is a bit smitten for Belly too. After all these times with Cam and Jere, Belly’s heart still belongs to Conrad.
I loved this book because of the drama, the romance, the twists and turns, and most of all the satisfaction of enjoying the book. I am not a reader myself, but this book is my all time favorite. It has so many dramatic turns that make me want to say, “Just one more chapter!” This book is definitely something to try, and enjoy for all time to come.
” I rolled down the window and took it all in. The air tasted just the same, smelled just the same. The wind making my hair feel sticky, the salty breeze, all of it felt just right. Like it had been waiting for me to get there.” (Pg. 3)
This is my favorite quote from the novel because it shows that Belly is so excited to be at the summer house, and it’s just like a vacation from reality. This quote also shows how Belly would rather be at the summer house than anywhere else, because of the “salty breeze, sticky hair, and the air smelling and tasting the same.” Belly really enjoys the summer house, and she feels as if it had been waiting for her to get there because of how much she loved that place!
My favorite character from this novel is Susannah, because she really cares about Belly, and understands her feelings and thoughts. A quote from the novel that explains this is,
“‘ Susannah?’
‘Hmm?’
‘Promise me something.’
‘Anything.’
‘Promise me you’ll never leave.’
‘I promise,’ she said without hesitation.”
This quote shows that Susannah cares about Belly because she doesn’t want to leave ear, and understands how Belly is feeling about Susannah getting cancer. In this part of the story, Belly is worried that Susannah will pass away or never recover. Belly asks Susannah about this in a thoughtful way, without trying to trigger any negative emotions. Susannah understands what Belly is trying to do, and assures her that everything is going to be fine, and that she will never leave Belly.
